Red Clay Studio

Where Art Meets Heritage

A creative space by Ibrahim Mahama, celebrating culture, history,

and community.

Our Story

Red Clay Studio is a visionary creative space founded by renowned Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, located in the heart of Jana, Tamale, in Northern Ghana. This transformative cultural hub stands as a testament to the power of art to bridge heritage and innovation, community and creativity.

Ibrahim Mahama, internationally acclaimed for his monumental installations and socially engaged artistic practice, envisioned Red Clay Studio as more than just an art space. It is a living archive of cultural memory, a platform for artistic experimentation, and a gathering place for communities to engage with contemporary art and historical narratives.

The studio’s architecture itself tells a story—built with traditional red clay bricks that echo the region’s rich building heritage, while incorporating modern design elements that speak to contemporary artistic expression. Every corner of Red Clay Studio resonates with the spirit of collaboration, learning, and cultural preservation.

Through exhibitions, workshops, research programs, and community initiatives, Red Clay Studio serves as a catalyst for creative dialogue. It brings together artists, scholars, students, and community members to explore themes of labor, migration, trade, and the complex histories that shape our present and future.

At Red Clay Studio, we believe that art is not confined to gallery walls—it lives in the stories we share, the skills we pass down, and the communities we build together. We invite you to be part of this ongoing journey where tradition meets innovation, and where every visitor becomes part of our collective narrative.
